How To Choose The Right Garage Door For Your Home

When it comes to choosing a garage door there are so many options to pick from, which can make it quite difficult. It is important that you pick something that represents your style, home while also keeping your home safe. Every kind of garage door comes with its pros and cons, which is what we will be discussing in this article. This will help you come to a decision on what door is right for you and your home.

Automated

The first thing you need to decide is whether you want your garage door to be automated or not. Any kind of door can be made to be automated a lot of the time but of course, one of the downsides to this is that your garage door will become more expensive in both installation and maintenance costs. Although this option is more expensive and they will need more maintenance, they are great options, as they add the convenience of not needing to get out of your vehicle as well as being a lot safer than manual doors too. An automated door is also much more accessible for people of all abilities.

Pros

  • Safer
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Needs more maintenance

Up & Over

Up and over garage doors are probably the most well known in the UK, they are simply the ones you lift up from the bottom and then pull up and slide across the ceiling. This is generally the easiest door to install and to use as well making them quite an affordable option if you are on a budget. Unfortunately, since they open outwards, this means that nothing can be in front of the door to open it and you will need a large driveway for the door to not cause any disruptions.

Pros

  • Simple to install
  • Easy to use
  • Cheaper option

Cons

  • Not great for smaller driveways

Sectional

This style looks quite similar to an up and over garage door but this one tackles the problem of space-saving. This door is built in panels so instead of it opening outwards and sliding in at the top, the panels allow it to roll up without coming up and still slide across the top. Since this is a bit more of a complex mechanism, we would expect this door to be a little more expensive. This door does offer great insulation and security that can’t be found in other garage door types which is great.

Pros

  • Space-saving
  • Great insulation
  • Great safety

Cons

  • More expensive than up and over doors
  • The complex mechanism means things could go wrong

Roller

These doors are similar to sectional garage doors as they come in panels, the difference is these panels are a lot smaller. As they are a lot smaller, this allows them to roll up instead of sitting flat against the ceiling, saving even more space if you want overhead storage in the garage. Unfortunately, if you do have a roller garage door that gets damaged, these can be almost impossible to repair, as well as this, these doors, do not provide the same level of safety that sectional garage doors provide.

Pros

  • Space-saving
  • Low maintenance

Cons

  • Very difficult to repair
  • Not as safe as sectional doors

Side Hinged

These doors open as if they were regular double doors so are a great and easy option if you are just using the garage door for walking in and not using it for your gar as this is much easier to open than a door you have to pull up. These are a very low maintenance option that can come well insulated and secure. However, these are a bit more difficult to make automatic so some companies may not offer this option, as well as this, you run into the same problem as the up and over doors, they open into the driveway so you need to save space to ensure you can get in.

Pros

  • Low maintenance
  • A great option for pedestrian use
  • Secure and insulated

Cons

  • Difficult to make automatic
  • Not great for smaller driveways
